The Harris County Housing Finance Corporation (HCHFC) and Harris County Housing & Community Development (HCHCD) hosted an early October demolition event at a site that will become the location of new affordable housing north of downtown Houston. 1406 & 1500 Hays Street is a 3.214-acre property located on Hays Street, bordered by Hardy, Orr, and Chapman streets in the Greater Northside neighborhood, where residents have cited affordable housing as the top need in the community. The new development will focus on sustainable and accessible design and will offer a minimum of 90-residential units.
“With this new development, we are reimagining what Hays Street can become,” said Rene Martinez, executive director of the Harris County Housing Finance Corporation. “Today marks a rebirth for not only this site, but for this neighborhood. Once this is gone, we will build housing and create a new place for people to call home.”
Financing for the project includes $7.3 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, with up to $5.8 million for purchase of the land and $1.49 million in ARPA State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds for due diligence and eligible pre-development costs.
