Houston’s senior population is growing, and so is the need for stable, affordable places for older adults to live and age with dignity. As housing costs climb and longtime residents feel increasing pressure from redevelopment and rising rents, too many seniors are being priced out of the communities they’ve called home for decades. The opening of New Hope Housing Ennis helps change that trajectory — adding 102 affordable apartment homes built specifically for older adults and intentionally designed to support connection, comfort, and independence.

To mark the opening, New Hope Housing welcomed partners, local officials, and community members to the property today for a ribbon cutting, brief program, and guided tours. Guests heard from leadership and project partners before exploring the new homes and shared spaces now available to residents.

Ennis was designed with seniors in mind — offering full kitchens with granite countertops, quality cabinetry, and energy-efficient appliances inside each apartment. The community includes a range of common spaces such as a resident lounge, computer/business center, theatre room, and a community dining room with a warming kitchen. Outside, residents can enjoy a landscaped courtyard with covered porches, seating areas, and pet-friendly green space.

The location supports aging in place with independence. Ennis sits near METRORail and is within easy access to grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and essential services — making everyday needs more accessible for residents who may rely on transit, walking, or mobility support.

Beyond housing, Ennis offers supportive services and programming tailored to older adults, including wellness activities, recreational opportunities, and events that encourage social engagement and connection.

The $31.3 million development was made possible through a combination of Housing Tax Credits, permanent financing, Harris County investment, and private fundraising — reflecting strong collaboration across public, nonprofit, and philanthropic partners.

With today’s celebration complete and residents already preparing to move in, New Hope Housing Ennis stands as a meaningful investment in housing access and quality of life for seniors — and a step forward in ensuring older adults in Houston can remain in the communities they know and love.
