Rice University Kinder Institute for Urban Research

A globally renowned interdisciplinary research organization at Rice University in Houston, the Kinder Institute is dedicated to inclusive prosperity, where everyone has an opportunity to contribute to Houston’s success and share in its opportunities. It focuses on the intersecting issues of housing, education, economic mobility, health and population through its five dedicated research centers.

Recently, the Institute released two studies which define and emphasize the growing need for critical affordable housing in Harris County: The 2024 State of Housing in Houston and Harris County and My Home is Here – Harris County’s Housing Needs Assessment and 10-year Strategy. The studies underscore the County’s projected population growth over the next decade, which indicates nearly 200,000 new households will be formed that are extremely cost-burdened and will increase the need for affordable housing options.

To meet these needs, Harris County needs over 20,000 new homes per year. HCHFC will help get us there by employing the multifamily housing finance tools available to us – including bonds, tax credits and housing partnerships – to finance affordable multifamily housing.
